Our official launch date is set – June 20, 2016.

On Friday, we signed the contract to sell our house. Holy cow. It is so effing real now. Matt wasn’t sure we should post anything for fear of jinxing it… but it is such a relief to have our house under contract. We didn’t even have to put the house on the market… some friends of ours, who are “in the know” about our plans, have friends who are moving back to Austin. They told their friends, and their friends said, “we want to see the house and are 1000% interested.” We cleaned/decluttered/staged our house in weeks (instead of months)… had two showings with the buyers… pre-negotiated price, dates, conditions, etc., and then a few weeks later… we all signed the papers!

Cheers to the buyer (wife still in Sweden) of our house!! The Luby's koozie is the best part of this picture. :)

Things that are awesome about selling to friends of friends:

  1. We saved 6% of the sale price since we didn’t need a realtor = more $$ in the boat kitty. (Actually – we split the savings with the buyer so they get a deal on the house, and we get extra $$.)
  2. No showings/open houses/keeping house spotless for weeks. THIS IS WORTH ALL THE MONEY IN THE WORLD, honestly.
  3. The wife buying our house is a MARINE METEOROLOGIST!?! WTH? What are the odds? Her entire job is to map out weather for BOATS! She is now my new BFF.  Seriously… she is so excited to help us plan our crossings, etc. And we are so excited to let her! How lucky is that?
  4. We have already planned a celebration with the buyers after we close… at “our” house!
  5. We are able to leaseback the house until we are ready to launch full-time on the boat. We picked June 20, so that the boys can finish school, I can finish a big work event, and we can sell off the last of the furniture we will still be using (like beds, etc.)
  6. They love our house as much as we do and are even buying some of our furniture (i.e. less to sell as we purge.)
  7. Our friends who introduced us are so excited they get to keep hanging out at “our” house after we move onto the boat. ha!  (And the boys are excited we can come back and visit “our” house!)

Only 96 more days…

  1. Just learning to sail & came across your blog- spouse is from Austin, I’m also from TX, and we love Luby’s, of course! Lou-Ann Special, for the win! Love your plan and look forward to following along! Currently exiled in Maryland.

    1. Hi Anne!
Thanks for reading. Yay Luby’s. haha. I used to live in Maryland! Not a bad place to be if you want to sail. 🙂 We’re planning to cruise the east coast next year before heading off to travel the world… goal is to be in Annapolis for the boat show next October… would love to keep in touch!
